5 Watersports to Try Before a Port Canaveral Cruise

Flyboarding one of the more popular watersports

Cocoa Beach is just south of Port Canaveral, and it’s the surf capital of the Atlantic.  Cruisers staying in Cocoa Beach, or anywhere in the Port Canaveral area, really owe it to themselves to get out on the water.  It can be a little worrying to someone who has never seen a body of water with salt in it, and doesn’t have any experience on the water at all, but there are plenty of watersports or other beach operations that will provide you with equipment and lessons for anything you might want to do in or on the sea.

Sky 1 Parasail

If there is a drawback to any watersports, then it’s that it can take some practice to even get started.  Even jet skis require a few minutes to figure out the controls.  Parasailing simply requires you to wear a harness and enjoy the views, and to those who you declare that it isn’t a sport we reply that anything that happens 40 feet above the water while suspended only by a sheet of fabric counts as a sport.

Wavemasters Surf School

The is more than one surf school in Cocoa Beach, in fact there are more like one hundred.  What makes Wavemasters different?  Well, they provide all of the necessary equipment without an additional charge.  Second, they offer lessons at multiple locations including the hotel you’re staying at.  Lastly, all of this comes at $70 for an individual lesson, or $60 per person for a group lesson.  A price that is far less than most of their competitors.

Surf and Ski Watersports

You don’t have to wait until you’re cruising to race along the water. There are jet ski rentals available near Port Canaveral.  You can do it the day before you embark.  Surf and Ski Watersports rents beach equipment like surfboards, kayaks, and umbrellas.  The real appeal though is the jet skis that cruisers can rent for the day, or take guided tour on, and interact with the dolphins and manatees in the Banana Rive, or just have a blast riding.  We aren’t too sure about that flyboard though.

Cocoa Beach is located just minutes south of Port Canaveral. To get the most out of your time, Cocoa Beach hotels offer the most convenient location to enjoy these watersports. The Hilton at Cocoa Beach is oceanfront, making beach time activities that much easier. Go Port offers these hotel packages with transportation included. Calema Windsurfing and Watersports

Windsurfing with Calema

There are a few things you can do with a surfboard when there is no surf.  One of these is paddling it around like a Roman galley slave—or an ivy league rowing team—the other is to hoist a sail and harness the wind like your seafaring ancestors.  Calema specializes in pretty much everything you can put a sail on.  In addition to windsurfing rentals and classes Calema offers 3 sizes of sailboat for lessons, and casual or guided tours.  Calema, notably, is located on its own sheltered anchorage on the Banana River.

321 Kiteboarding and Watersports

Catch the wind without a mast, or that pesky need to stay on the surface of the water.  Kiteboarding is a bit of an odd cross between windsurfing, waterboarding, and motocross.  While you’re probably not expected to pull off some sweet 360s and flips your first time out just starting to learn is an afternoon’s worth of fun.  For those that prefer to stand up there is paddle boarding as well.
